Punta Sayulita Longboard and Stand-up Paddle Classic

Sayulita, Nayarit, Mexico will be the site of the first Punta Sayulita Longboard and Stand-up Paddle Classic on Saturday April 17 and Sunday April 18, 2010, with a mix of invitees from the International Field of Professional Longboard and Stand-Up Paddle surfers and a number of amateurs participating. The program will include an “expression session” air show of acrobatic aerial maneuvers presented by professional short boarders.

Sunday´s events will bring Stand-Up Paddle races including open ocean 5K and 10K “Punta to Punta” races between Sayulita and neighboring San Francisco (San Pancho). These races are open to all ages and ability levels.

Actor and environmental activist, David Chokachi, best known for his role as Cody Madison on ¨Baywatch¨, will also be participating in the Classic. David was recently awarded the Surfrider Foundation´s prestigious ¨Keeper of the Coast¨award in recognition of David´s work in fostering environmental awareness.

The Classic Awards Dinner Fiesta is scheduled for Sunday evening at the Don Pedros oceanfront event palapa with a  Mexican BBQ buffet, live music and a raffle. The Classic Fiesta is open to the public and tickets may be purchased at the door. Proceeds raised from the Classic will be donated to the local Sayulita chapter of the Reef Check Foundation an international non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of tropical and rocky coral reefs around the world (www.reefcheck.org), and to The Punta Sayulita Foundation, a non-profit organization established by the Punta Sayulita residential community with the aim of supporting various educational, cultural and environmental initiatives benefiting the community of Sayulita and the Bay of Banderas area.

Sayulita is the ideal location to hold an international surfing event like the Classic and we are pleased it has attracted some of the top professional longboard and SUP surfers to the field seeing that this is the event’s first year. We look forward to growing the event each year and raise as much money as possible for the local charities.
