Barra de Nexpa 2011

Caleta de Campos, Michoacan, May 2011

The small town of Caleta de Campos is perched on a rocky outcropping overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the caleta (small rocky bay) that gives the town some sheltered swimming when the surf isn’t too high. Barra de Nexpa, the surfing point, is slightly north of Caleta at the mouth of the Nexpa River.

There’s not much in this area except some beautiful, rocky coastline and great surf. The coastal highway that connects Caleta de Campos to the closest International airport to the south at Zihuatanejo is being widened and straightened in a lot of places, so there are construction dust and delays along the way.

The beach at Barra de Nexpa is lined with beach bungalows and rentals for surfers, who flock into town every time a big swell is predicted. An area under the palms near the point has shaded spaces for tenters and campers. There are a few restaurants serving fish and simple beach and Mexican fare, nothing fancy. Even though Nexpa hasn’t been on the grid for many years, there’s Internet available now.

A small store sells ice, beverages and a few miscellaneous staples. There are stores in town where you can get all the other basics: fruit, veggies, meat, dry goods. Caleta also has basic pharmacies and medical service, a surf shop and laundromat, etc. If you’re looking for more complicated supplies, there are larger supermarkets and larger supply stores in Lazaro Cardenas, about 45 minutes south.

There are two Pemex stations in Caleta; the one closest to Barra de Nexpa is currently closed, but there’s another just south of town.

We stay at Rio Nexpa Rooms on the river–one of the places with indoor plumbing (:
