Archaeology of Mexico and MesoamericaThe country of Mexico has a wealth of archaeological sites and resources which are the legacy of ancient cultures and civilizations that include the Olmecs, Toltecs, Teotihuacanos, the Maya and Aztecs. Some of the most impressive pyramids and archaeological ruins in Mexico are found at Teotihuacan near Mexico City; at the Monte Alban site just outside of Oaxaca City; at Palenque, an extensive ceremonial site of the Mayas in the jungles of Chiapas; and Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Tulum on the Yucatan peninsula. There are numerous sites of varying extensions found all over the country, and some of the smaller, less transited sites are often considered the most interesting, allowing for greater freedom of exploration than the larger, more crowded and touristically developed sites.
