Federal District Mexico City

Founded in 1325 as the ancient Aztec site of Tenochtitlan, today Mexico City is a sprawling metropolis and life center of the Mexican republic.

It is located in a high basic in the center of the country, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes and bordered by the neighboring states of Mexico and Morelos.

Principal attractions in this bustling city include the colonial structures of the city's historical center in the area of the Zocalo, such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, Palacio de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Palace) and the National Palace, as well as the important archaeological site of the Templo Mayor, discovered only in 1978. Chapultepec Park, with Chapultepec Castle perched on its hilltop, attracts visitors and residents alike to its flower-lined promenades, fountains and quiet corners; situated within the park are also the spectacular Museum of Anthropology, Museum of Modern Art and the Mexico City Zoo. Suggested too are visits to the Basilica de Guadalupe, the shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint, to which are attracted thousands of pilgrims yearly. The neighborhoods of San Angel and Coyoacan provide wonderful interludes for walking through the streets, browsing and people-watching, and Xochimilco's floating gardens to the south of Mexico City have been a favorite visitor's destination for centuries.
