Surf-Mexico Guide to Surfing and Adventure Travel in Mexico

Sinaloa

The state of Sinaloa is located on the western coast of northern Mexico. It is bordered by the Sea of Cortes (Gulf of California) to the west, the state of Sonora to the north, Chihuahua to the north-east, Durango to the east and Nayarit to the south. It is an agricultural, fishing (particularly shrimping) and livestock breeding state.

Sinaloa's capital is the city of Culiacan. located about halfway down the state and slightly inland from the coast. Near Culiacan are the hot springs of Imala, Carrizalejo and Macurimi, all located on the Tamazulathe river near Presa Sanalona (the Sanalona dam). Fishermen find Culiacan a popular destination due to the proximity of a number of lakes with excellent bass fishing. Within the capital itself, visitors can enjoy visits to the Botanical Gardens and Science Center of Sinaloa, the regional History Museum, the Art Museum and the cultural offerings of the Centro Cultural Genaro Estrada (Difocur), which includes a theater where the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra plays every season.

Other important cities in the state of Sinaloa are Mazatlan, Los Mochis and Topolobampo. Without a doubt, Mazatlan, on the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortes), is Sinaloa's favorite destination for national and international tourists who come for the fabulous beaches, water activities including diving and surfing, and incredible saltwater sportfishing for catches such as sailfish, marlin and mahi-mahi. Mazatlan is also host to one of Mexico's largest and most festive carnivals, with street dances, carnival parades and lots of music and fun.

Los Mochia and El Fuerte are the western gateways to the spectacular Copper Canyon. From either of these towns travelers can embark on El Chepe (the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway) for a fascinating trip into the interior of neighboring Chihuahua state. See Chihuahua's Copper Canyon for more information.
