Surf-Mexico Guide to Surfing and Adventure Travel in Mexico

Tlaxcala

Dubbed the "Mushroom Capital of Mexico", Tlaxcala is the nation's smallest state but with great colonial charm situated in the high plains of central Mexico and bordered by the states of Hidalgo, Mexico and Puebla. It has no coastline, nor are there any major lakes or rivers within its borders. Its capital is the city of Tlaxcala. Other large and important communities in the state are Huamantla, Apizaco and Chiautempan.

Despite its diminuitive size, Tlaxcala holds over 1,000 archeological sites, the largest of which are the ceremonial center of Xochitecatl, with some impressive pyramidal structures and monolithic pillars, and Cacaxtla, close to the town of San Miguel del Milagro, which features some monumental, mineral-pigmented murals. The site of Tizatlan is unusual in that it features adobe brick structures, stuccoed altars and also murals. Most of Tlaxcala's archeological sites have yet to be excavated and therefore are not accessible to the public.

Other attractions are La Malinche Volcano and National Park, which offers eco-tourism activities such as biking, hiking, climbing and horseback riding, and touring the instances of fine colonial architecture of Tlaxcala's cities. The town of Huamantla, designated a Pueblo Magico (Magic village), is known for the fine bullfighting stock raised there, as well as the National Puppet Museum and annual puppet festival.
