Culture and Society
Mexico is a country in evolution, forging its way into modernity from a long and richly varied cultural background. Its past and present combine the influences of a kaleidescope of ancient cultures and civilizations including the Olmecs, Aztecs, Mayas and Zapotecs, Toltecs, Huastecs and Totonacs, and in the latter, colonial times, the great influence of Spain. Through it's both harsh and illuminated history, many of the ethnic cultures which prevailed before the time of the Spanish conquest still survive and carry on their original folkways and heritage.
