Cuernavaca, City of Eternal Spring

Known as the City of Eternal Spring, Cuernavaca is rife with riotous bougainvillea and other brilliant vegetation, stately mansions and colonial architecture.
Cuernavaca is the capital of the Mexican state of Morelos. Located only about 80 kilometers or 50 miles to the south of Mexico City and some 650 meters, or 2,000 feet, lower in altitude than the nation''s capital, Cuernavaca has been a special and valued place of rest and relaxation since the days of the Aztec kings and later the Spanish conquistadors and noblemen. Today it continues to be one of the favorite weekend escapes from the bustle and frenzy of Mexico City.
Cuernavaca boasts a large number of excellent Spanish language schools and cultural institutes well attended by those looking to learn the Spanish language and study cultural themes in an interesting and friendly setting.
Things to see in Cuernavaca:
- The Cuauhnahuac Museum, located in the Cortes Palace just off the large, central square in downtown Cuernavaca. Precolumbian and colonial era artifacts, murals by Diego Rivera.
- The Teopanzolco pyramid, located near Plaza Cuernavaca
- The Borda Gardens, summer home of the Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Empress Carlota
- The Cathedral, two blocks off the square at the corner of Hidalgo and Morelos streets. Mariachi mass is presented here every Sunday.
- Cuernavaca's municipal market, a sprawling and colorful complex bustling with merchants; wander through masses of piled fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, the meat and fish sections, the flower market, clothing and housewares.
- Ex-Hacienda de Cortes, a sugar hacienda now converted into a lovely hotel on the outskirts of the city.
