Petatlan, Guerrero
Petatlan is a short half hour drive from Zihuatanejo. The town boasts a beautiful modern church, gold market and street market.
To get to Petatlan drive south past the airport on highway 200 for about 30 minutes and turn right after the bridge marked "Puente Petatlan".
The Church "Cristo Jesus de Petatlan" is situated in a lush setting surrounded by trees adjoining the town square, gold market and street market in downtown Petatlan. Though not a historical or colonial style, the church boasts some beautiful stained glass and well manicured grounds. People travel from many miles away in search of miracles which are believed to be performed for the faithful in this Catholic Church.
The Gold Market in Petatlan is directly accross the street from the main entrance to the church. These friendly people sell a wide variety of gold jewelry by the gram but be prepared to bargain to get the best price available.
Near Petatlan is the Soledad de Maciel Archaeological site, with a small, locally-established museum and guides who will take visitors to the small, unexcavated site itself.
As an added attraction to the area, every year in October, the nearby town of San Jeronimito, located just before reaching Petatlan from the Zihuatanejo direction, hosts a white-water rafting event that has become internationally known and attended.
