Xilitla: Ex-convent of San Agustin
In 1550 Xilitla was visited by Augustinian Monks Fray Juan de Sevilla and Fray Antonio Roa. They discovered there a prosperous town in which was founded, in 1557, the Convent of San Agustín.

In 1587 Xilitla suffered an attack by the Chichimecas, forcing the few survivors to abandon the site for about half a century. Even though the convent structure was immense, the jungle quickly overtook it during the time of abandonment, and wild animals made it their home.
It was well into the 17th century before a few families were brought from the area of Jacala, Hidalgo to repopulate the region and reclaim the convent and surrounding buildings from the jungle.
What we see of the convent today is only a part of it's original version, and the town square of Xilitla - Jardin Juarez - was initially an orchard.
