Reptiles & Amphibians

Mexico has crocodiles, green and black iguanas, geckos, turtles and tortoises, frogs and toads of all kinds.

Here are only a few examples found in the coastal regions in particular.

Crocodiles

Crocodile on La Ropa

Look for crocodile and alligator things...

Crocodiles love the water but they don't always spend all their time immsersed in it. Crocodiles can often be seen in their habitats along the estuaries in the coastal areas of Mexico with mouths open, sunning themselves placidly on the sand.

Ixtapa Island crocs

Photo taken near the Ixtapa Island pier, Guerrero. Crocodile preserve where you can watch the crocs resting on the rocks and cool, damp sand along the backwater.

Iguanas
Iguana

Green  iguanas live in tropical and subtropical regions from northern Mexico to central South America. With short, powerful limbs, sharp claws and a long, strong tail. they can reach sizes of up to over 6 feet in length. The crest of soft spines along the back is longer in the male, and it's color is more pronounced than in the female of the species.

This little iguana was photographed hanging out at La Perla bar in Zihuatanejo during Pro-football season a couple of years ago. The cigarette pack is to give you an idea of the iguana's size, although they can get much bigger than this one is.

Iguanas make good pets!

Turtles

Geckos

Geckos are small lizards found all over Mexico. They love to live indoors, perching themselves up high along walls and near light sources where they can easily hunt for bugs. They have a very musical chirp that serenades you after dark.

Here is a gecko silhouetted inside a lamp shade - perfect place for catching unsuspecting flying insects. Often when you see geckos outlined like this against a light, you can actually spot, through their semi-transparent bodies, the insects that are inside their stomachs!

Frogs

Brilliant green tree frogs can be seen scaling walls and trees, with their large, innocent, ET-esque eyes...
