Some 1,500 spectators gathered on the beach of Quimixto, Jalisco, Mexico to watch the 2010 Quimisto Surf Tournament unfold this past January 30th and 31st.
42 competitors from 8 states of the Republic plus 2 from the U.S. participated in the Open Board category, and an additional 40 competitors made up the Youths sub-18, Bodyboard and Veterans 40+ categories, making a grand total of 82 competitors present at this international surfing contest. With only 6 of the Open Board category competitors hailing from the host state, there was a different sort of atmosphere felt here than is normal in the local Jalisco tournaments. Everyone camped out and shared nights around the campfire, with some of the surfers going out to catch a wave or two under the light of the full moon.
The 4-to-8-foot waves cooperated both early and late in the date, but on Sunday Neptune gifted the tournament with the best formed and sized waves of all, allowing the competitors to shine in the water.
Winners in all categories were awarded surfboards, bodyboards and sponsor-donated products.
The Women´s open category was canceled due to reasons beyond the control of the organizers.
