Las Grutas de Cacahuamilpa
Located 52 kms. from Taxco, Gro. on Highway 166, the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, or Cacahuamilpa Grottos, make for a fascinating excursion. Guided tours are conducted on the hour as of 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. every day, taking you through approximately 2 kms. of the underground labyrinth. Each tour lasts about 2 hours.
As of June, 2000, the entrance fee was $30 pesos per person.
Just before reaching the entrance to the grotto are a couple of majestic Amate trees (those used for the making of bark paper typical to the area) showing their twisted root structure.
Be sure to wear sturdy, slip-proof shoes for the tour. Some parts of the path are quite slick with moisture and deposits. The maw of the cave beckons some and deters others. The cavern mouth measures 21 meters in height and 42 meters in width.
The caverns were discovered in 1834 by Manuel Saenz de la Peña and were decreed a National Park in 1937. Only 10 of the estimated 70 kilometers of passages and chambers have been explored to date.
The highest of the explored chambers measures some 80 meters in height. The average height of the chambers is 40 meters.
